The Oil and Gas Division regulates the drilling and production of oil and gas in North Dakota. Our mission is to encourage and promote the development, production, and utilization of oil and gas in the state in such a manner as will prevent waste, maximize economic recovery, and fully protect the correlative rights of all owners to the end that the landowners, the royalty owners, the producers, and the general public realize the greatest possible good from these vital natural resources.

BISMARCK, ND – Chord Energy notified the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division of a produced water and crude oil spill at the Thomas 4I central tank battery site. The incident occurred on August 6, 2026, approximately 15.5 miles southeast of Epping, North Dakota in Williams County.

BISMARCK, ND – Murex Petroleum Corporation notified the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division of a produced water and crude oil spill at the Hoiby 4-31 SWD site. The incident occurred on August 5, 2026, approximately 12.5 miles west of Powers Lake in Burke County, North Dakota.

The U.S. Geological Survey plans low-level airplane flights over eastern North Dakota and small nearby areas of Minnesota and South Dakota to image geology using airborne geophysical technology. The survey is scheduled to begin Monday, June 15 and will continue into the fall, weather and other flight restrictions permitting.
