In 2004 the Geological Survey embarked on a project to take digital photographs of all the oil well cores in the Wilson M. Laird Core and Sample Library. The core facility contains approximately 485,000 feet of rock core. As of January 1, 2024, 246,459 feet of core has been photographed, generating more than 380,478 core photographs for the Oil and Gas subscription website.
