In 2004 the Geological Survey embarked on a project to take digital photographs of all the oil well cores in the Wilson M. Laird Core and Sample Library. The core facility contains approximately 487,000 feet of rock core. As of January 1, 2025, 263,000 feet of core has been photographed, generating more than 402,000 core photographs for the Oil and Gas subscription website.
