FOSSIL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT-CUSTER NATIONAL FOREST AND NORTH DAKOTA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY: A MODEL OF COLLABORATIVE STEWARDSHIP

Management of nonrenewable paleontological resources on the Little Missouri National Grassland, North Dakota is a cooperative effort between the United States Forest Service-Custer National Forest, North Dakota Geological Survey, and the United States Forest Service Northern Zone (Nebraska National Forest) paleontologist. Training of United States Forest Service personnel to recognize paleontological resources in the field and to become familiar with fossil resource excavation and collection techniques is one of the activities included in this program. United States Forest Service personnel involved in this training have included line officers, law enforcement officers, and staff members from Forest Service Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8.

Inventories of fossil sites on lands administered by the Custer National Forest to determine the types of fossils found on these lands and their significance is an important part of the program. This information is used in overall resource management planning including the Northern Great Plains Forest Plan revision. The designation of the North Dakota State Fossil Collection as the repository for fossils found on Custer National Forest lands in North Dakota allows for preservation of these fossils for scientific research and educational purposes. Educational activities including the excavation, restoration, and display of fossil specimens is an integral part of the program. Participation by members of amateur paleontology groups, individual volunteers, and university and high school students is encouraged as part of this education component of the program.
